James Cummings is long time resident of Morehead City, N.C. and a 1990 graduate of West Carteret High School. In 1995, James received his B.A. in Industrial Relations from UNC-Chapel Hill. After graduation from UNC, James lived in Jackson, Wyoming and Raleigh, N.C. before deciding to attend law school. James graduated cum laude from Campbell University in 2001. He was a member of Law Review, the National Trial Team and Order of the Kivett. Despite his academic achievement, James biggest accomplishment in law school was meeting and convincing his wife Sydney to marry him.

After law school, James began his legal career with Ward and Smith, P.A. in New Bern, N.C. He concentrated his practice in the area of employment and immigration law. In 2005, James moved back to Morehead City and went to work with his wife in the law firm of Cummings and Cummings PLLC. For the last eight years, James has concentrated his practice solely in the area of Criminal Law handling thousands of criminal cases including DWI/DUI, Wildlife Violations, Traffic Tickets, Assaults, Drug Charges and Property Crimes.

The law firm of Cummings and Kennedy is the continuation of a family firm that was originally started by James' father, Robert Cummings in 1996. The firm has always been located in Carteret County and believes that the best results are achieved for the client by treating them like they are a family member.

Mr. Cummings is a member of the N.C. Bar Association, N.C. Advocates for Justice Criminal Section, 3-B Bar and Carteret County Bar. Over the years, Mr. Cummings has been asked to give a variety legal lectures to local civic groups, area schools and churches.

Mr. Cummings is a past board member (2003-12) of the N.C. Seafood Festival, serving as chair person in 2009. Currently, James serves as President of the Brandt Animal Foundation which helps injured and homeless animals in Carteret County. James and Sydney are members of First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City and the Dunes Club of Atlantic Beach.

A former youth group leader in the church, James now spends his spare time coaching his sons' baseball, soccer and basketball teams depending on the season. James loves the outdoors and appreciates the opportunities that living in Carteret County give him to do so.
