Sydney Cummings was born in Lexington, N.C. and graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1994. Sydney received a degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1998, where she double majored in American Studies and History. Sydney graduated Campbell University School of law in 2001. She was a member of the Campbell Law Review and worked as a researcher for both the Campbell Law Observer and Williston’s on Contracts, 4th ed.

During law school, Sydney met her husband James and in 2001 they relocated to Carteret County after graduation. She is a member of Carteret County Bar Association and acted as Secretary of this organization for many years. She is a Past-President of the Judicial District 3-B Bar Association and has also served as Treasurer.

During her career, Sydney has handled a variety of cases. She has assisted local homeowners with real property purchases and helped residents set up business entities. She has also represented and advocated for clients who have been abused, neglected, or who have been declared mentally incompetent. She acted as the Guardian ad Litem Attorney Advocate for Carteret County for 7 years. She was also served as the Public Guardian and Public Administrator for Carteret County. She has volunteered as a mentor for Carteret County Teen Court and is currently serving on the Carteret County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.

Sydney enjoys reading, cooking, travelling with her family and watching her two sons play sports. She volunteers at her sons’ school PTO and is a Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City.
