Navigating North Carolina Felony Laws with Experienced Defense

As opposed to misdemeanor convictions, felony convictions usually have far severer penalties, ranging from fines to jail time. Can a Felony Be Expunged?

Conviction does not have to be the absolute reality as of December 1, 2017. First offenders convicted of a felony while under 18 may petition to expunge their criminal record. Such an eligible candidate must also show a clean criminal history since their conviction. In some instances, traffic violations may not hinder an individual’s eligibility for expungement.

A felony conviction is only eligible for expungement after four years from the date of the trust or four years after a served a sentence. Contact our legal team to learn more about whether you are eligible to expunge your felony.

What is the Difference Between a Felony & Misdemeanor in North Carolina?

In North Carolina, the differences between felony and misdemeanor charges are quite distinct. A felony is a more serious crime with heavier consequences if convicted, such as fines, probation and possible incarceration.

  • The prison term for felony crimes can range from one year to life in prison depending on the severity of the crime. Misdemeanors are minor criminal offenses for which lesser punishments are issued.
  • Punishments for misdemeanors are generally fines or county jail sentences that do not exceed one year of confinement.

Given the wide variance in punishment and consequence availability according to North Carolina law, particularly felony statutes, an individual charged with a felony or other serious crime requires the assistance of an experienced felony lawyer in Beaufort NC.
